Beware of Memorial Day scams aimed at military personnel

Memorial Day is a time to honor those who serve and remember those who have died in war. But sadly, it has also become a key opportunity for scammers to target those who are serving or have served their nation, especially elderly veterans.

Cleveland Police investigate shooting near Councilman's home

Ashbury Avenue, Cleveland

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO)- Police are investigating after a man was shot near Cleveland Councilman Kevin Conwell's house.

The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on Ashbury Avenue on Cleveland's east side.

Police believe two men went to an abandoned house to buy drugs.

Once inside, they were confronted by three suspects.

One of the suspects shot the victim in the leg. He is being treated at MetroHealth Hospital for non life threatening injuries.

There are no arrests.

RTA accident on Cleveland's east side

East 79th and Kinsman, Cleveland

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO)- An RTA accident on Cleveland's east side.

It happened just before 9 a.m. at the intersection of East 79th and Kinsman.

Two passengers were transported to a local hospital with no visible injuries.

Officials tell 19 Action News the bus clipped the pole while making a right hand turn.

The bus was taken to the garage for service.

The Games promote rehabilitation through rigorous competition in such events as air guns, archery, bowling, field events, billiards, slalom, swimming, table tennis, track, bocce and weightlifting.

Teens who text and drive are more likely to take other chances

 

In 2011, nearly half of high school students 16 and older reported texting while driving in a large national survey. Teens who reported texting while driving also were more likely to behave in other risky ways. They were five times more likely than those who did not text while driving to operate a car when they had been drinking alcohol. And those who texted more often were much more likely to skip wearing a seat belt.

SUSPECT PIC: Man beaten with screwdriver, robbed of lottery tickets

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO)- Cleveland police are looking for the suspect who beat a man for his lottery tickets on the city's east side.

Police tell 19 Action News a man was robbed after buying tickets from Chili's Beverage on East 112th and Forest Avenue Monday morning.

As the victim was walking home, he was attacked from behind. The suspect knocked the victim to the ground and repeatedly struck him with a screwdriver. The suspect then stole the lottery tickets and cash from the victim before fleeing. 

After further investigation by Fourth District Detectives, it was discovered that the suspect was in the store when the victim purchased the lottery tickets. After the violent robbery, the suspect returned to Chili's Beverage and got a refund for the tickets. 

While getting a refund for the tickets, the suspect was caught on a store surveillance camera.

The suspect is described as a black man, 35 to 40 years of age, mustache, 5' 8", 160lbs. and wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt.
