Schools to host neighborhood mixers

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Transformation Management Office will hold summer mini-camps as they work toward the goal of building new blended school communities. These camps will focus on developing healthy relationships through team building, peer leadership exercises and interaction.

There will be a mixer from noon to 1 p.m. July 6 at Daniel E. Morgan school, 8912 Morris Court.

The district hopes to encourage and foster good student-to-student relations in advance of the 2010 – 2011 school year as many students are displaced due to their schools closing.

Healing service offered in light of parish closings

The Catholic faith community at Our Lady of Peace Parish (East 126th and Shaker Blvd.) is holding a healing prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.

In light of the closing of nearby St. Adalbert parish in Cleveland, this invitation to the healing prayer service is extended especially to the former members of St. Adalbert, as well as to the parishioners of other nearby parishes which closed as part of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese reconfiguration plan, diocese officials said.

June 30 marks the conclusion of the closing of parishes which were the result of the Diocesan Vibrant Parish Life Initiative which began nearly 10 years ago.

Vanessa Griffin Campbell, director of the Ministry to African Americans in the Diocese of Cleveland explained the purpose of the service:

“I, like most of the folks of St. Adalbert feel like a family member has died.

New addition adds third dimension to Larchmere Festival

We recently posted information about the upcoming Larchmere Festival, which will be held July 3 (read more here).

Here’s an update: the new addition this year will be the creation of three-dimensional chalk art on the sidewalk of LifeSkills. The above photo is an example from another festival.

Chalk artists Robin VanLear and Jesse Rhinehart will appear at the festival to create the two-dimensional chalk drawings that look three-dimensional. VanLear is a sculptor, costume designer and performance artist who has served as the artistic director of The Cleveland Museum of Art's Parade the Circle throughout its 20 year history. She has won numerous awards and grants for her work, and organized the museum's "I Madonnari" Chalk Festival.

Her husband, Rhinehart, is a painter, muralist and educator.

Pastor Moss receives honors at academy’s gala

Local theologian, pastor, and civic leader, Rev. Otis Moss Jr., was proclaimed a “Faithful Father” during Pine Forge Academy Foundation’s “A Tribute to Faithful Fathers” gala this Sunday in Chicago.

Moss was among six fathers who received accolades during the Father’s Day gala at the Alhambra Palace in Chicago. The purpose of the event was to recognize fathers whom have taken an active role in the rearing of their children and have made a positive impact in their communities.

Pine Forge Academy Foundation selected Moss due to his continued emphasis on family and the role of the father within his ministry. He is the son of Magnolia and Otis Moss Sr. and the fourth of their five children. Moss is also the father of Otis Moss III, pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, who presented the award to him that evening.

“I want to thank my wife for our 44 years of marriage, and for making fatherhood a great joy, honor and privilege,” Moss said.
